Putting The Bite On Bad Teeth

If you've ever had a toothache, imagine dealing with it every day.

Imagine now that you’re 8 years old and you can’t eat or sleep or pay attention in school because your mouth hurts so badly every day.

Hundreds of children face this painful reality across the Mohawk Valley. Since 1966, I’ve been treating 200 to 300 Head Start children each year who had never seen a dentist before.

I’ll as a child with an abscess or bad cavity “Does this hurt?” And too often the response is, “Yes… So?” They don’t know until I fix their teeth that it’s not supposed to hurt when they eat or drink!

Dentists in the area are very generous. Many are willing to accept reimbursements from Government health care insurance programs. Others provide professional dental services free of charge.

But many don’t know how to go about reaching out to the kids who need them.

On Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., I will join more than 40 dental professionals to try to put a smile on 85 children at Faxton-St. Luke’s Dental Health Center. We have volunteered the day as part of the national Give Kids a Smile program, sponsored by the American Dental Association. It will be more than just a day, though. It will be the springboard for a regional initiative to find “dental homes” for kids who need them. Although this clinic is filled, there will be other opportunities for dentists to serve children in need by providing regular dental exams and cleaning.

The American Dental Association says 53 percent of all children ages 6 to 8 will have tooth decay that causes infection and pain. Much of it goes untreated. Some children already are at the point at which their only alternative is a mouth full of crowns or the removal of teeth to decayed to be restored.

The James. M. Rozanski Dental Residency Program at Faxton-St. Luke’s organized the local effort with the Mohawk Valley Perinatal Network and Utica Cerebral Palsy. We got grants from Excellus BlueCross BlueShield and the Oneida-Herkimer County Dental Society, equipment services from Benco, and donations from dentists, businesses and civic groups.

We need the supports of parents, politicians and people who care to halt this epidemic. We’re delighted that so many people in the Mohawk Valley recognize the need and are reaching out to help meet it.

If you would like to help Give Kids a Smile, join us for the event of call Debra Altdoerffer, vice president of communications and marketing at Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare.

Digital Scanner Provides Enhanced Precision, Comfort, less time at the Dentist and Convenience for Patients!

Charles E. Burns DDS today announced the addition to his practice a revolutionary new tool in the quest for better smiles -- the Cadent iTero™ Digital Impression System. Designed to replace the "dreaded goop", unpleasant taste, drooling, inherent inaccuracies and gagging associated with traditional impression taking for crown & bridge restorations, iTero enables Dr. Burns to offer his patients a technology driven impression procedure that is far superior to conventional methods.
By using a hand-held wand to optically scan the area to be restored, the patient’s entire impression is created 100% digitally with no mess or bad taste. This translates into a more comfortable impression process, less chair time and more precise fitting restorations that look and feel like natural teeth.
iTero™ eliminates weaknesses in the impression process, such as voids, pulls, and tears. With a precise starting point, dentists are able to create digitally accurate restorations.
“My patients and I are amazed at the simplicity of the impression taking process and even more amazed by the accurate fitting, beautiful restorations produced.” - Dr. Charles E. Burns
